Oleksandr Lavrynovych: The Parliament can support the Majority System of Elections to the Local Authorities this Year
Oleksandr Lavrynovych, First Vice-Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, admits the possibility that next year´s elections to the local councils will be held under the majority system. He made the above-mentioned statement in the program at Channel 5. According to O.Lavrynovych, the Parliament can support the majority system of elections to the local authorities even this year, provided the parliamentary majority approves of it.
"I think there is enough time. There are four plenary weeks before the campaign of elections to the local councils, of village, township and city mayors is launched. This matter can be settled even this year, provided the parliamentary majority upholds it", - the First Vice-Chairman stated.
O.Lavrynovych believes that the majority system of elections to the local authorities fully reflects the demands of the local self-government. He also stated that the Party of Regions developed clear-cut standpoints concerning this issue. The proposals were brought before Parliament, but the pro-governmental majority failed to support them.
